I wanted to try something new to introduce about 200 new books we had and stir some excitement about them. So, we had a New Book Party this week after school. I visited many classrooms and talked to classes that came in to check out in the library for the week before the party with a cart and a few samples of our new books. I hooked them with the books we expected to be the most appealing and told them how to attend the party. To attend they had to pick up and “invitation” in the library, which had a permission slip on the back. They returned the signed slip to the library before the party. The party lasted an hour after school and I was surprised to have attracted 70 students to the party! Other than having all the new books displayed on all the tables for first peak, the attendees also could buy posters for $2.00 (we had a ton of them saved from many past bookfairs), participate in a guessing contest to guess how many books are in the library, practice putting on two putting strips and compete on a third (one successful putt gets your name in drawing for free posters), and be the first to check out the new books. To avoid friction over the dash for certain books, we put the Top Picks on a table by themselves and if you wanted one of those, you had to enter a drawing. I had a bunch of teachers volunteer to stay and help, which was vital. It would have been chaos without them. It turned out to be a big success. Everyone, even the teachers, had a great time! And the new books are flying off the shelves!

Happy New Year! I hope that everybody had a wonderful and restful holiday and is refreshed and ready for the second semester. Although I’d love another week or two to stay home and make jewelry, (my current crafting obsession) I’m here and ready to collaborate with and support the LMS teachers and students, just as I know that you are in your respective schools!
Toni, Teresa, and Jennifer have joined Kelley and Annie in setting up their Edublog accounts and now have access to post and comment on the blog. I’m sure they will have great things to share with us as school gets cranked up again. Consider posting comments and questions about the updated Destiny here so that we can all benefit from our “collective brain.”
Welcome back to school, I’ll see you at the meeting next week (on the 8th) at Cedar Ridge!
– Kim =)

I’ve been dealing with a digital camera shortage since we lost one of our mavicas, and have had to check out the one that I have for the media center (to take photo of new students, media events, etc.) When I purchased it I was not at all considering checking it out, so the fact that it connected via a USB and required software didn’t faze me. Now, however, it’s become somewhat burdensome. But I have a solution!
I’ve decided that I am going to use the unspent database money to purchase several inexpensive (less than $100.00) cameras for checkout. I’ve been looking at the Kodak 8.2 MP EasyShare C813; it uses either an SD card or MMC card, both of which are removable media.
While looking for the cards, I found a deal at WalMart.com that is a 1GB SD card with a USB card reader, it sticks in the USB port, just like a flash drive. Actually, you can customize your order and get the size and type card that you want!
I spoke to our ITS about it and we both feel that with that card reader, anybody who uses the camera will be able to take their pics, remove the card from the camera, insert it into the USB card reader and open the folder to retrieve their photos.
This (in theory) would make it much like a floppy drive process. Have any of you tried this? If you have, please click on “Comment” and let us all know how it worked.

Kelley and Annie have been brave souls! They both checked out the blog and let me know that they couldn’t access it. This sent me digging in the Help section, where I learned that in order to access the blog they had to be set up as users, and in order for me to set them up as users, they had to have an Edublog account. They both have access now, and hopefully before too long they will create their first posts here!
Creating a post is not difficult once you have access to the blog. All that you have to do is click on the Site Admin link under META on the left. Then click on the Write a Post link and begin.
If you would like to be able to post and comment to posts, set up your user account and let me know what email address you used for it. I’ll set you up as a user and you’ll be off!
We’re in the HOME STRETCH, only 3 more days!

I hope that everyone who was at today’s meeting had a good time and saw something new that they are planning to try. I also hope that those of you who are already surfing in the Web 2.0 stream will use the CCALMS Wiki and this blog to share what you are doing and how its working out.
One of the great opportunities that online applications (like blogs and wikis) present us with is the ability to increase our collaborative efforts, with each other and between our students. Wouldn’t it be great if we could, through collaboration with our teachers, have students contribute to the same project online? This type of networking would let them experience collaboration as it is in the real-life workplace!
Have fun, stay sane, Christmas break is only 10 school days away!
Happy Thursday! =)
Kim
